THE EMISSARY: A BIBLICAL ECIC (1997) The early first century followers of Jesus were a small, struggling group within Judaism who seemingly posed no threat to anyone, certainly not the mighty Roman empire. But there was one determined to see this fledging faith exterminated. His name was Saul and he became the greatest persecutor of the early church. But within a matter of a few years, the Christians fiercest opponent became it most effective advocate. Struck down by a powerful conversion experience on the road to Damascus, Saul--his name changed to Paul--went on to become the greatest missionary in the history of Christianity. He went on to write more of the New Testament books than any other. |

KING DAVID (1985) Director Bruce Beresford has safely stayed within the domain of the Bible and not strayed into patches of Hollywood fiction in this routine version of the story of David (Richard Gere). For that reason, anyone unfamiliar with Biblical history might be puzzled by the episodic presentation of David's life. In the opening scenes, Samuel condemns Saul and anoints the young David as his heir, and in fairly quick succession David slays Goliath, incurs Saul's jealous wrath, leaves, and, much later, comes back to rule after Saul has died. Once David is on the throne, Bathsheba and then Absalom enter into the picture. |
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1956) The story relates the life of Moses, from the time he was discovered in the bullrushes as an infant by the pharoah's daughter, to his long, hard struggle to free the Hebrews from their slavery at the hands of the Egyptians. Moses (Charlton Heston) starts out "in solid" as Pharoah's adopted son (and a whiz at designing pyramids, dispensing such construction-site advice as "Blood makes poor mortar"), but when he discovers his true Hebrew heritage, he attempts to make life easier for his people. Banished by his jealous half-brother Rameses (Yul Brynner), Moses returns fully bearded to Pharoah's court, warning that he's had a message from God and that the Egyptians had better free the Hebrews post-haste if they know what's good for them. |
ABRAHAM (1994) This entry into TNT's lavish and acclaimed Bible Series follows the tale of humble shepherd Abraham (Richard Harris) as he leads his flock to the Promised Land despite great danger. When the voice of God himself tells Abraham that he must lead his family and a group of like-minded believers on a harrowing journey to the Promised Land, the travelers' faith is tested as they face famine, death, and war at every turn. Through all of their hardships, Abraham's flock is determined to make the journey no matter what the cost. |
DAVID (1997) This made-for-tv religious epic relates the life story of David, one of the Bible's most fascinating figures. David's life included a passionate affair with Bathsheba, an odds-defying defeat of Goliath, to a struggle with King Saul. This film, co-starring Jonathan Pryce, Leonard Nimoy, and Sheryl Lee touches upon these and many other aspects of his existence. |
ESTHER "THE BIBLE: ESTHER" (1999) The biblical story of Esther, the Jewish woman who saved her people when they faced annihilation. As a girl living under Persian rule, Esther was essentially kidnapped and taken into the harem of the king, Xerxes. The king, taken by her beauty, made her his queen, and as dramatized in the film, she found herself involved in a delicate balancing act between the ruling Persians and her own Jewish people. But it does provide a solid telling of Esther's story, and if considered as something of a docudrama, it's successful. The production does provide much of the period flavor of ancient life, and the major facets of the story and portrayals of the characters coincide with biblical accounts. |
JEREMIAH (1998) Part of a four volume video Bible series, JEREMIAH tells the tale of the prophet who abandons his family and the woman he loves in order to relay God's message of the impending demise of the Holy City. Although he's met with disbelief and eventually branded a traitor for delivering such atrocious news, he continues his task until his prophecy is fulfilled and Jerusalem is destroyed by the Babylonians. |
JOSEPH (1995) Biblical, made-for-cable film about Joseph, the youngest and favorite son of Jacob, sold into slavery in Egypt by his jealous brothers, who becomes, through intelligence and common sense, one of the Pharaoh's most trusted servants. A fine dramatization of the Old Testament tale of Jacob's son who rose to power in Egypt, much to the dismay (and chagrin) of his ten older brothers. |
JOSEPH AND HIS BRETHREN (1960) From the pages of the Old Testament comes the story of Joseph, beloved son of Jacob and steadfast servant of God. He is presented as the favored son of Jacob and Rachel, sold as a boy into slavery by his brothers, who were jealous of Joseph's dreams and of his coat of many colors given him by Jacob. In Egypt, Joseph gained a position of authority in the household of his master, Potiphar, and was later imprisoned on the false accusations of Potiphar's wife. He was released after interpreting Pharaoh's dream of the lean and fat cows. Pharaoh renamed him Zaphnath-paaneah and took him into favor. Due to the obedience of Joseph to his God, Egypt is greatly blessed. Joseph's recognition of his brothers in the famine years when he was governor over Egypt is a famous scene. |
JOSEPH OF NAZARETH (1999) An interpretation of the life of Joseph of Nazareth, the husband of the Virgin Mary. |
ONE NIGHT WITH THE KING (2006) "One Night With The King" chronicles the life of the young Jewish girl, Hadassah, who goes on to become the Biblical Esther, the Queen of Persia, and saves the Jewish nation from annihilation at the hands of its arch enemy while winning the heart of the fiercely handsome King Xerxes. |

Looking for help, he seeks the advice of the prophets on how to defeat his enemies.Saul is told about a young shepherd called David who will defeat the mighty giant Goliath and also will be the new King of the Israelites. |
SAMSON AND DELILAH (1997) Samson and Delilah is a stunning film based on the most provocative of all Biblical tales. Samson (Eric Thal) is a simple shepherd with the strength of a titan and the destiny to fight the Philistines and General Tariq (Dennis Hopper). Delilah (Elizabeth Hurley) is a Philistine beauty, torn between her love for the shepherd and loyalty to her people. As told in the Old Testament, Samson's betrayal by Delilah left him in slavery. But Samson's epic revenge vanquished his Philistine foes and made him one of the greatest heroes of the Bible. Samson and Delilah is the powerful tale of a deception that brought down an empire and sealed their names in eternity. |
